About the Author

After 10 successful years as a physical therapist, Lori Batcheller followed a personal yearning to pursue her love of writing and the creative process by returning to school to obtain a master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Since graduating in 1997, Batcheller has served as a Publications Director for a small Colorado marketing firm, as a Publication Specialist for a nonprofit health care firm in Western Massachusetts, and as a feature writer for IBM Corporation. In addition to her freelance writing and journaling workshops, in 2003 Lori began a private holistic physical therapy practice combining her traditional massage techniques and exercise programs with Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki.(About Massage by Lori)  She is a member of the Association of Integrative Healers, which offers an open house to sample alternative healing methods in and around Boulder three times per year.

Batcheller's articles and poems, generally focused on health, personal growth, and transformation, have appeared in trade magazines, newspapers, on-line publications, and poetry anthologies including Delicious Magazine, Accent on Living Magazine, Physical Therapy Bulletin, Advance for Physical Therapy, Advance for Occupational Therapy, inMotion Magazine, The Inspiring Times, The New Times, New Mobility, Colorado Editor, Longmont Daily Times-Call, Perform Magazine, Juneau Empire, Loveland Reporter-Herald, and Many Hands

Batcheller's passion to write poems, articles, and books that inform, educate, and inspire led her to write her latest book, "Alpine Achievement: A Chronicle of the United States Disabled Ski Team" (number one team in the world!). The book includes the remarkable stories of Team members, a history of disabled skiing, and extensive resources.

Batcheller holds a bachelor of arts in biology from Colby College and a master's in physical therapy from Hahnemann University. In 1998, Batcheller became a Certified Journal Instructor through the Center for Journal Therapy and began offering journal-writing workshops to foster creativity, personal growth, and well-being through libraries, schools, wellness organizations, clubs, and other venues. A journaler since childhood, Batcheller incorporates her own experiences using writing as a tool for accessing creativity, personal growth, and healing into her workshops. Her journal was a key element in making the transition from physical therapist to writer and workshop facilitator, in healing old emotional wounds, and rediscovering her Authentic Self. It also played an important role in her recovery from chronic neck pain.

Batcheller's workshops clients include Greenfield Community College, Amherst Leisure Services, Wilbraham, Westboro and Munson Public Libraries, Zonta International, and the Boston and Northampton Whole Health Expos. Batcheller's monthly e-zine, Creative Journaling, offers readers information on specific journaling techniques, writing prompts, and suggested books and resources. Her book and tape, Journey to Health: Writing Your Way to Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Well-being offer over 14 different journal-writing techniques, guided meditations, and tools for enhancing your journal-writing experience.

A dynamic and inspiring speaker, in 2002, Batcheller began offering talks on disabled skiing to hospitals and rehabilitation centers based on her experience covering the 2002 Paralympic Games, serving as a volunteer adaptive ski instructor for the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, and her research for Alpine Achievement.

As I teach workshops, I am continually amazed at the power of writing, especially in a comfortable workshop setting where participants support one another's journey. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to pass this fun, creative and powerful tool onto others.
